Dementia Friends is a global movement improving understanding of dementia and empowering communities to support those living with it. In Georgia, over 188,000 people with dementia engage daily with businesses, public services, and neighbors. This session, based on training from Dementia Friendly America and GARD, introduces the five key messages about dementia, tools to become a Dementia Friend, and the chance to train as a Champion to expand awareness statewide. Attendees receive a certificate, resources, and the opportunity to help GSLA lead in fostering dementia-friendly communities.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the national and statewide efforts to create dementia-friendly communities and why they matter.
- Summarize the five key messages about dementia that increase understanding and support for individuals living with dementia.
- Discuss practical ways senior living professionals can foster awareness and inclusion within their own communities
Meet the Speaker:

Francis Yelton is from Augusta and graduated from Augusta College, with a Bachelor’s in Sociology and a Certificate in Gerontology. Recently has accepted the position as the GARD Coordinator; (Georgia’s Alzheimer’s and Related Dementia).
She served as the DCS, Dementia Care Specialist, for the Central Savannah River Area AAA, where she had the opportunity to serve those living with Brain Change and the Care Partners that walk the journey with them. Francis has served as an Executive Director of Home Care and worked with as a Case Manager serving those provided care by the Elderly and Disabled Waiver Program. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, family and monogramming.
