Reimagining Dementia Care Throughout the Continuum: Hands-On, Practical, Proven

This full-day pre-conference workshop is designed primarily for experienced memory care or engagement professionals who are ready to think more strategically about purposeful engagements and support for residents living with dementia throughout the care continuum.  Senior living leaders seeking to strengthen their organization's approach to dementia support will also find the content highly applicable.

Through a combination of instruction, hands-on practice, case studies, peer collaboration, and working sessions, participants will explore practical, proven approaches for supporting individuals on a dementia journey across the senior living continuum from Independent Living through Assisted Living and Memory Care.

The day will explore:

• Behavioral expressions, triggers and proactive approaches to unmet needs
• Practical application of Montessori principles to engagement, care delivery and expressions
• Effective engagement practices and adapting engagements across changing cognitive abilities
• Practical principles from Memories in the Making, a strengths-based creative engagement
• Supporting individuals throughout the dementia journey across the continuum
• Working session to develop your own action plan to apply these principles and methods

Learners will move from concept to application, practicing techniques and applying principles to real-life scenarios and their own communities.  Attendees will leave with practical tools, greater confidence applying dementia-capable engagement strategies, and an actionable plan for strengthening engagement and dementia support within their own organization.

Learning Objectives:

• Analyze behavioral expressions to identify potential triggers, unmet needs and both proactive and reactive interventions.
• Apply Montessori principles to engagement, care delivery and behavioral expressions to increase purpose, choice, dignity and participation.
• List several engagement practices for individuals living with dementia including adapting engagements across changing cognitive abilities.
• Demonstrate strengths-based creative engagement practices, based on principles from Memories in the Making, to support expression, contribution, dignity and resident identity.
• Identify opportunities to strengthen dementia support across the senior living continuum, including Independent Living, Assisted Living and Memory Care.
• Develop an actionable plan to strengthen engagement and dementia support within their own community or organization.
