Dementia Friends Champion Training
Prerequisite: Attendees must have previously completed a Dementia Friends Information Session and become a Dementia Friend before attending this Champion training.

Dementia Friends is a global movement that is changing the way people think, act, and talk about dementia. The Dementia Friends USA initiative is administered by USAging and is offered to GSLA members in partnership with the Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Aging Services. By helping people better understand dementia and its impact, each of us can make a difference for those living with dementia and the people who care for them.
This interactive training prepares participants to become Dementia Friends Champions, equipping them to lead Dementia Friends Information Sessions within their organizations and communities. Building on the foundation of the Dementia Friends initiative, attendees will strengthen their understanding of the program's five key messages while developing the facilitation skills, presentation techniques, and confidence needed to engage a variety of audiences.
Through guided practice and discussion, participants will learn how to effectively deliver Dementia Friends Information Sessions and develop a plan for expanding dementia awareness in their workplace and community. Upon successful completion, attendees will be certified as Dementia Friends Champions and authorized to facilitate Dementia Friends Information Sessions.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate an understanding of the five key messages of Dementia Friends and effectively communicate these concepts during a Dementia Friends Information Session.
- Apply facilitation techniques and adult learning strategies to confidently deliver Dementia Friends Information Sessions to a variety of audiences.
- Develop a plan to implement Dementia Friends education within their organization or community to expand dementia awareness and promote dementia-friendly practices.

Francis Yelton is from Augusta and graduated from Augusta College, with a Bachelor’s in Sociology and a Certificate in Gerontology. Recently has accepted the position as the GARD Coordinator; (Georgia’s Alzheimer’s and Related Dementia).
She served as the DCS, Dementia Care Specialist, for the Central Savannah River Area AAA, where she had the opportunity to serve those living with Brain Change and the Care Partners that walk the journey with them. Francis has served as an Executive Director of Home Care and worked with as a Case Manager serving those provided care by the Elderly and Disabled Waiver Program. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, family and monogramming.
