Representative Purcell serves House District 159, which encompasses west Chatham and south Effingham Counties. She was elected to The Georgia House of Representatives in November, 2009. Her Committee Appointments include Chairman of the Public Safety and Homeland Security, Vice-Chairman of Governmental Affairs, Appropriation, Public Safety of Appropriations, Economic Development and Tourism, Health and Human Resources, and Education. Representative Purcell, also, was appointed to the Georgia Arts Policy Commission, the Transportation Roundtable, and the Jekyll Island Authority Oversight Committee.
Representative Purcell previously served in the Georgia State House of Representatives from January 1991 until January 2005. In 2005, she was appointed to the State Board of the Technical College System of Georgia where she served as the Chairman of the Governance, Operations and Audit Committee. Representative Purcell also served as the Chairman of the Georgia Education Liaison Committee.
Representative Purcell is a published genealogist and the office manager for Chatham Radiation Oncology Associates, P.C. She is a former teacher and real estate salesperson. Purcell served on the Effingham County Adult Literacy Advisory Committee, Georgia Art Commission Policy Committee, and Effingham County American Cancer Society Board of Directors. She is a life member of the Georgia Salzburger Society having served as President for two years and a life member of the Medical Association of Georgia Alliance having served as its President.
Additionally, she is a life member of the Effingham Historical Society, member of Rotary International, Effingham Chamber of Commerce, YMCA, an Honorary member of the Georgia Sheriffs Association and an Honorary State Trooper with the Georgia Department of Public Safety. She served as a member of the Hope Scholarship Study Commission. She has been recognized by many organizations. Representative Purcell was recognized for her continuing support of our military by receiving the Charles Dick Awardfrom the National Guard Association of the United States and the Minuteman Award from the Officers and Enlisted Associations of the Georgia National Guard. She has been awarded "Who's Who of American Women," "Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare" and Who's Who in America." Purcell has been honored by the Herald Staff and County Citizens as "One of the 10 Top Women of Effingham County.” She received honorary life membership from the Salzburg er Verein e. V., Berlin, Germany.

City of Rincon honored her as "Humanitarian of the Year 2012" and the Effingham Sheriff's Department named her "Citizen of the Year 2012" for her dedicated and continuous service to the community and the State.
Purcell received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with a major in Mathematics from Georgia Southern College. She served as chairman of the Board of Trustees at Armstrong Atlantic State University, and, recently was honored for her service on the Board of Trustees of Georgia Southern University. Mrs. Purcell and her husband, Dent W. Purcell, M.D., have three children and eight grandchildren. They are members of Springfield United Methodist Church and reside in Rincon, Georgia.
